We stayed a few miles down the coast from Port Douglas, known for its 4-mile long beach and harbor offering many cruises out to the Great Barrier Reef. Our lodge was very nice with great views of the coast and free Internet. We have become so dependent on the latter that it seems like a great hardship if we go for a few days without it.

Meals at the lodge overlook the Coral Sea and are accompanied by many brilliant Lorikeets, which are one of the most common birds in Australia.

We took a guided bird tour at the lodge, and were attacked by the Masked Lapwing with spikes on its wings activated to inflict damage when we got too close too its eggs and nest. The eggs were out in the middle of a grassy park, an unlikely place for a nest, but must work as this bird is seen everywhere. So far this is the only animal attack of the trip.

Port Douglas is the nearby town and has this wonderful four-mile beach that is free from dangerous box jellyfish for another few weeks, and is claimed to be free from crocodiles, although we hear various accounts of people or children or dogs being taken by crocodiles, and it is hard to determine which if any are true.
